Set-top boxes (STBs) were once standard in hotel TV systems, but many properties are now transitioning to system-on-chip (SoC) hospitality TVs that eliminate the need for external hardware.

STBs add complexity because they require additional power, cabling, and maintenance. Each box is another potential point of failure, which increases service calls and operational costs.

Modern hospitality TVs with built-in software can handle:

• Content delivery

• Casting functionality

• Channel management

• Guest interface systems

By removing STBs, hotels simplify installations, reduce clutter behind TVs, and improve long-term reliability. However, some properties may still use STBs in legacy systems or specialized setups.

For most renovations and new builds, moving to SoC-based solutions is considered a best practice.
